 What is Autism?


Autism (sometimes called "classical autism") is the most common condition in a group of developmental disorders known as the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). Autism is characterized by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests.

What is the prevalence of Autism?
Autism is the most common of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders, affecting an estimated 1 in 146 births.

What are some common charectristics of Autism?

Insistence on sameness; resistance to change
Difficulty in expressing needs, instead of using gestures or pointing. Repeating words or phrases in place of normal, responsive language
Prefers to be alone; aloof manner
Laughing, crying, showing distress for reasons not apparent to others
Little or no eye contact
Tantrums
Difficulty in mixing with others
May not want to cuddle or be cuddled
Sustained odd play
Unresponsive to normal teaching methods
Spins objects
Uneven gross/fine motor skills
Not responsive to verbal cues, seems deaf although hearing tests in normal range.
